At T'chiyah, we pride ourselves on our longstanding warm embrace of people of diverse identities. Historically, our LGBTQ+ congregants have led special Shabbat services for occasions like Pride Month, Coming Out Day, AIDS Awareness Day and more. Since 2018, T'chiyah has been enrolled as a participating community in the Keshet Leadership Project, a program to help synagogues and Jewish institutions bolster their LGBTQ+ inclusivity. The trainings galvanized lay-led initiatives for the formation of a dedicated LGBTQ+ Task Force and the creation of LGBTQ+ specific affinity group programming - a blessing to the whole community as we work to become more just and embracing of everyone in our midst!
With over 25% of our congregation identifying as LGBTQ+, a model that merely seeks "inclusion" is insufficient. Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael will help us explore: How can we best follow the lead of our LGBTQ+ congregants and move the needle from INCLUSION to CENTERING?
This 2-hr Zoom-based training is appropriate for LGBTQ+ folks and allies of all knowledge levels. We will cover a basic overview of terminology and etiquette re: LGBTQ+ folks, explore the annals of LGBTQ Jewish history, learn models for institutional change, and work together to identify our "game plan" for making T'chiyah the community we want it to be. Together, we'll strive to chart our collective course, using LGBTQ+ liberation as our North Star!
**This training is open to T'chiyah members, fellow travelers, and non-members alike. We will focus a bit on interventions within the T'chiyah community.**
