For most of our history since our founding in 1977, T'chiyah was an entirely lay-led congregation, where every member was expected to lead Shabbat services. Now we are blessed to have Rabbi Alana at the helm, but lay leadership is still a vital and precious aspect of our community!
Learning the basic structure of the Shabbat service not only enables you to volunteer for the community as needed, but also to develop a deeper personal understanding and practice of Jewish tradition and spirituality. Serving as a leader also provides the opportunity for you to put your own creative spin on our communal practices, by incorporating contemporary reflections, poetry, alternative approaches to prayer, and more.
Join us for this beginner-friendly training to get to know the basic structure of Jewish prayer, and how to lead a service at T'chiyah!
This training will be led by our Community Engagement Associate Jake Ehrlich and veteran T'chiyahnik Maureen Lyn Bernard, who learned to lead Shabbat services at T'chiyah and since has devised an "on one foot," short-and-sweet framework for teaching service leading.
NOTE: All are welcome to attend - not just members of T'chiyah - but we will follow T'chiyah's Reconstructionist customs when it comes to matters of what's essential vs. optional, etc.
