This program is part of our Getting Good at Getting Older series - tailored for older folks, but open to all. You do not have to be a member of T'chiyah to join-in and participate.
Join us for an evening of peer support and workshopping to help identify and articulate the non-material riches we wish to pass on to the next generation. . .
In Rabbi Laura Geller’s book, Getting Good at Getting Older, she introduces the subject of the “Ethical Will” in Chapter 31 with this:
"In the Jewish cultural experience, one of the ways to answer for our life is by writing an ethical will. Since the days of the patriarchs and matriarchs, Jews have been leaving their family written documents outlining the values they want to pass on to future generations. An ethical will should not be confused with a legal will, that is, a last will and testament. The latter is a legal document detailing how you want to dispose of your physical property after death. An ethical will is a personal articulation of the nonmaterial values and wisdom you want to pass on."
She goes on to make an example of Jacob who gathers his children around his bedside to tell them how they should live after he’s gone. But she is not suggesting we outline instructions to the people we may leave behind, rather she urges us to think and record the values we would like to be remembered by, in part by influencing that we wish for those descendants, partners, community members, and other recipients - even your congregation and/or your alma mater.
So now, let’s get together on Thursday, May 6th at 7 PM to get started! For those of us who have started writing with certain readers in mind it would be an opportunity to get a critique and to share that written testimony with a respectful, caring set of friends for more ideas. For those of us who are interested and have not started it will be a way of creating space and motivation to begin.
