Class Begins on February 10 at 6:30 pm! RSVP for Location Info!
Are you curious about all those funny calligraphied shapes in the prayerbook?
- Do you remember a thing or two from Hebrew School or Yiddish shule but aren't sure how to restart your learning?
- Are you newly Jewish, Jew-adjacent and/or a "late bloomer" who's looking to deepen your fluency in Jewish tradition?
- Or are you just looking for more opportunities to build community, learn together, and empower one another to explore Judaism & Jewishness?
We're excited to be gearing up for our second-iteration of our Aleph Bet Intensive course, where we'll cover the basics of letter recognition, writing, reading and deciphering Hebrew in preparation for deeper study of Hebrew, Judaic languages (many of which, like Yiddish and Judeo-Arabic, utilize the Hebrew script) and Jewish tradition. We'll also cover some basic Hebrew vocabulary to help make services much more accessible!
This is class is designed for adult learners of all backgrounds to learn the very basic elements of the Hebrew alphabet, or aleph bet. We'll gather together over dinner in an informal setting and work through a custom-designed curriculum that incorporates writing, music, apps on your mobile device, and more. A beginner's and intermediate cohort will meet simultaneously, with a combination of teacher-supported learning and independent work.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:
- "I was amazed how much I learned. The class was well planned and well taught. Not knowing anything about Hebrew nor being unable to recognize any words during services was a detriment to my full participation in worship and practice. Now I am able to read just enough that I am excited to learn more. What a gift!"
- "Taking this class deepened my understanding of Hebrew and the beauty of the language. I don't just see words in black and white I now am gradually seeing them in color and meaning during services. I'm very grateful and there is no set monetary amount I can place on this learning experience."
- "Many Jewish spaces operate under the assumption that everyone is proficient in Hebrew, which can be disempowering for those of us who didn't get a formal education in the language. Attending a few aleph bet classes has made me feel less lost in Hebrew texts and allowed me to connect more deeply at services. We're stronger as a community when we can stay on the same page (of the siddur)."
This class is open to the public and, thanks to the generosity of the D. Dan & Betty Kahn Foundation, is being offered at a pay-what-you-can rate, to help offset the costs of dinner and staff labor. Sign-up below for more info!
