A course with Dr. Justin Sledge
One of the cornerstones of ancient Israelite religion is the ability of some to commune with and speak for God. In fact, the Torah itself is said to be the result of prophet revelation! This class will be an introduction to the major and minor prophets of the ancient Israelites. From prophetic duels, strange marriages, laying naked in the streets, to foretelling coming woe, the prophets and prophecy were a core component of Israelite religion. We will also get acquainted with prophecy in the ancient near eastern world, specifically in Mari and Assyria, and see how Jewish prophecy continued through the ancient world unto now.
Highly encouraged is for folks in the class to be reading Abraham Joshua Heschel’s major study of the the prophets along with the class.
This weekly course will begin at 11AM each Sunday from Sunday, April 8th through Sunday, May 27th. On April 29th, we will be meeting at 5PM instead of at 11AM. On May 6th we will return to our regular schedule and meet at 11AM.
