Teshuva, Tefilah & Tzedakah: Notes on our Services

The High Holiday liturgy stresses the importance of teshuva (repentance or "return"), tefilah (prayer) and tzedakah (justice) as the guiding themes of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Whether this is your first or forty-third Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur with T'chiyah & RCD, we hope that our services provide a taste of each of these elements. Some notes to help you get oriented:

  • We strive to create a meaningful, accessible experience for all! Our services are a mix of traditional Hebrew liturgy and contemporary English-language poetry / inspirational material. Hebrew readings are supplemented with translations and transliteration, and our service leaders work to help attendees access the essence of the liturgy that lies beneath the words.
  • There will be lots of singing! Please take time to familiarize yourselves with some of our tunes by going to http://www.tchiyah.org/music. Services will be accompanied with guitar and percussion to help deepen the collective experience. If you're a shofar-blower, please feel free to bring yours! If you're interested in joining our musical davening team, please email Jake Ehrlich.

  • In keeping with our annual tradition, we invite you to bring canned/boxed foods or non-perishable household items (i.e. toilet paper, soap) to donate. These will go to Yad Ezra, our local Kosher Food Distribution Center.

Volunteering, Childcare, and Accessibility

Our services depend on the enthusiastic participation (and hard work!) of our congregants. If you would like to volunteer to help set-up, usher, or schlep in any way, please contact Roz Schindler (RozSchind@aol.com). If you would like to sign-up to do an English reading as part of the service, please contact Raya Samet (RayaPapaya@gmail.com)

Childcare will be provided on each day of services by the Detroit Radical Childcare Collective and by volunteers in our community. Children are welcome to hang out in our supervised childcare area, where they can play, color, read and be cared for the duration of our services -- or, they are welcome to join us in the sanctuary for services themselves! Parents are encouraged to bring a snack for their kid(s) and whatever they might need to feel comfortable. ***If you are intending to utilize our childcare or would like to sign-up to assist in childcare, please email Jake Ehrlich.***

ACCESS NOTESWe strive to create an environment that is supportive of the various access needs of our attendees, while also recognizing that no space can be totally supportive of every person. See below for some accessibility notes, but please email us if you have a specific access-related question or need.

  • Our services will utilize microphones and electronic amplification for musical instruments.
  • The building entrance, sanctuary, and restrooms are wheelchair-friendly. Depending on weather conditions, workshops may be held outside or in classrooms that would require one flight of stair-climbing.
  • Most texts read aloud will be provided in print in the form of a paper handout. Much of the Hebrew used in the service is also provided in transliteration and poetic translation in the prayerbook. Service leaders will periodically offer kavanot, inspirational words that serve to orient participants to the purpose and meaning of each ritual element. Page numbers will be announced and visible on a "scoreboard" at the front of the room.
  • Restrooms will be designated gender-neutral to support the queer, trans, intersex, nonbinary, etc. people in our midst. There are changing tables in each restroom.
  • T'chiyah and RCD do not adhere to unified standards regarding kashrut (Jewish dietary law). Food served on Rosh Hashanah Day 1 will be vegetarian but not kosher-certified. There will be hekshered kosher food available for the Yom Kippur break-fast provided by the Downtown Synagogue.
