The Reconstructionist Congregation of Detroit & Congregation T'chiyah invite you to:
A Vote, not a Veto: An Introduction to Reconstructionist Judaism
When: 6 Sundays, February 19-March 26, 11:00 am-12:30 pm
What: Orthodox, check. Reform, check. Conservative, check. But, hold on, what in the world is Reconstructionist Judaism? Its a question that every Reconstructionist has gotten and has probably puzzled over themselves. Congregation T'chiyah and the Reconstructionist Congregation of Detroit proudly affiliate themselves with this relatively obscure branch of Judaism but just what does that mean?
Join Dr. Justin Sledge (PhD in philosophy, MA religious studies) as we study the writings and thought of the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan. We will investigate a wide range of topics including, the origins of Reconstructionism, Reconstructionist theology, relationship to tradition, commitment to modernism, the question of Zionism, scripture, and more. Kaplan's writings provide a great jumping off point for thinking about the meaning of Reconstructionist identity today.
